Letter: Proposed introduction to 9-R meetings is misguided

I recently read an article about our school board voting soon to start reading a very long-winded statement before each meeting, basically acknowledging we are all a bunch of racist conquerors. This statement is nothing but virtue signaling and a pathetic effort to be as “woke” as other government bodies around the county have been.

This area is home to three Native American tribes and many of our neighbors work for one of the divisions of the Southern Ute tribal enterprises. The Southern Utes have been generous and good neighbors to this county and it’s citizens.

Perhaps we have some Black Lives Matters members on the board who think bowing down and voicing a divisive narrative before each meeting is the way to show atonement for all the sins of the past. If this is passed by our current board, it will do nothing but cause resentment and bad feelings toward our Native American neighbors.

At a time when we all are supposed to be coming together to celebrate the working of our Democratic system, efforts to stigmatize the non-native portion of our population as the hateful and devilish descendants of white oppressors is not productive.

If outside groups, not a part of the school board, are pushing this misguided and unnecessary statement, they should be ignored. If we have school board members who are the catalyst for introducing this nonsense, they should be voted out at the earliest opportunity.
