Letters: Forest Service dubious on Valle Seco land exchange

If I may, I would like to use a phrase that seems to have been lost to the ages. “Heavens to Murgatroyd!” It came to mind after I read the guest editorial by Kara Chadwick, the supervisor of the San Juan National Forest, extolling the virtues of the Valle Seco land exchange (“

Not one mention of anything negative, like losing the entire length of Forest Service Road 660A to private ownership, which the public and hunters now enjoy.

Like losing an entire meadow that is well known to hunters.

Like losing four campsites in an area where campsites are at a premium.

This will take place in only one area of the 11 areas being traded. And remember that to gain control of the Valle Seco area, the Forest Service loses control of 472 acres that will become private ownership.

Gates will go up, fences will be built and No Trespassing signs will appear.

The guest editorial suddenly appeared in The Durango Herald after the Forest Service received letters of opposition to the exchange.

It is my understanding that the Forest Service is supposed to remain neutral during the initial phases of a land exchange.

Neutral? Hardly. It would appear Chadwick already has the “Approved” stamp in her hand.
