Letters: Happy trails to pardner Cy Scarborough

My heart sunk when the news of Cy Scarborough’s passing was printed in the

My husband and I moved our family to Durango because we loved its spirit of the Old West, and Cy’s Bar D Chuckwagon truly embraced that spirit!

The family-friendly Western chuckwagon supper and show featured one song that especially tickled my funny bone – “Who Spit Tabacky on Hessie’s Weddin’ Dress?”

Even remembering that song makes me smile.

Several years ago, I asked him why he didn’t play his commode-a-phone in the show anymore, and he told me he retired it after somebody said it was offensive. Was it just because the instrument was made using a toilet seat? Heck, that was what made the number a real knee-slapper! (Some people just don’t have a sense of humor, I guess.)

Taking in a night at the Bar D Chuckwagon supper and show was a highlight of my family’s reunion held here in Durango. Now we can only hope the remaining Bar D Wranglers keep Cy’s legacy alive. I’ll always remember Cy’s easy smile and like to imagine his spirit being up there with the ghost riders in the sky! Happy trails to you, pardner!
