I was pleased to read about Durango’s collaborative planning for business (“
In a time when most people will be spending most of their time sequestered in crowded cities, a getaway to Durango will seem like paradise. We can focus on making Durango a safe and welcoming tourist destination in this new world. Visitors who are used to city habits of social distancing will be relieved to see folks wearing masks when they visit.
I wear a mask in public to limit the spread of coronavirus because minimized spread means maximized opportunities for people to work and stay healthy. That’s freedom to me, but I understand that others see things differently.
For those who cannot bear to wear masks, maybe the city should consider allowing commercial establishments to choose one of two operating modes, freedom or safety, and allow customers to choose as well. Require that each business post a prominent, standardized sign in its front window stating its mask and social-distancing policy. Risk-takers would tend to socialize with other risk-takers. People who want to minimize the spread of the virus could feel more confident that they are choosing a lower-risk place of business.
