Letters: Please don’t sacrifice safety at 32nd Street

I live on Bennett Street. When I walk in my neighborhood, I often need to cross 32nd Street. This is a busy street and drivers are intent on getting into what is now, when westbound, four lanes from one. It is not easy to turn on to 32nd Street and even more difficult to cross as a pedestrian.

In our community as in many others, we have had the unfortunate reality of pedestrian and vehicle injuries and fatalities.

The Open Space and Trails master plan approved in 2001 called for doing away with at-grade street crossings for safety.

We won’t all agree on the need for a bridge nor on the design of said bridge.

There are many needs in our community and this project has been in process for years. There has been an extensive public vetting and the Animas River Trail contributes to the health and wellbeing of our community. Please don’t sacrifice safety in the final stages of its completion.
