Skyhawks lead Grizzlies 1-0 before weather wipes out soccer match
Ryan Schaul made two saves for Fort Lewis College, but he didn’t need to make an attempt on Adams State’s other four shots as they all were off target. Maik Brandt (3), Schaul and the Skyhawks led 1-0, but the game was canceled in the 63rd minute because of lightning. It was rescheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday at Dirks Field.

Players and coaches from both Fort Lewis College (3-0-1) and Adams State (2-1-0) kept looking up at the clock during Tuesday’s men’s soccer match as storm clouds gathered around Dirks Field.
The Skyhawks led 1-0 in the 63rd minute when play was stopped because of lightning.
Lightning continued to strike near the field, and eventually the game was canceled and rescheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Had the game lasted seven more minutes, it would have been considered a full game, giving FLC a 1-0 start in its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season.
Instead, the game never happened as far as records and statistics are concerned.
The delay also exceeded the NCAA’s 90-minute limit for a delayed game, which forced the cancellation.
The Grizzlies and Skyhawks will play a full 90 minutes Tuesday starting at 0-0.
“I’ve never seen weather like this in six years,” FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said during the delay.
It initally looked like the game would be able to continue, but the storm worsened as the delay went on and left FLC without choices.
The Skyhawks took a 1-0 lead after Luke Lawrence headed Alberto Capdepon’s corner kick past Adams State goalkeeper Jared Wilson.
Lawrence nearly added to his tally twice in the second half, but Wilson denied him both times.
FLC led 1-0 at halftime and could have had a larger lead if not for Wilson’s work and some missed opportunities.
Adams State outshot FLC 7-6 in the first half, but many of those attempts were off target; Skyhawks keeper Ryan Schaul only needed to make two saves.
Skyhawks’ captain Johannes Sander left the match in the 56th minute with an apparent right leg injury.
It was the second FLC soccer game to be delayed because of lightning this year: The Skyhawks’ home opener against Mary was suspended but resumed later that day.
FLC will host Colorado Christian at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
