Genealogical Society to meet Saturday

The Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Animas Museum in Durango.

After a brief business meeting, Anna Hopkins-Arnold will give her presentation of Tracing Irish Roots.

Learn how Irish history influenced emigration from Ireland. Identify different waves of Irish and Scots-Irish immigrants, and use it to choose useful record sets.

Benefit weekend at Zia Taqueria for DEVO

Zia Taqueria will host a Benefit Weekend for Durango DEVO at its north and south locations on Saturday and Sunday.

A percentage of Zia Taqueria’s weekend sales will go to help Durango DEVO in its 10th year to continue supporting its mission of “building lifelong cyclists one ride at a time.” Bike on down to either Zia location Saturday and Sunday to support Durango DEVO, your local youth biking organization.

Social hour for dogs at Humane Society

La Plata County Humane Society will again host “Doggie Social Hour” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in the outside play yard. Knowing how important good dog relationships are to our community, LPCHS hosts this public event to provide a safe, fun opportunity for dogs to interact in a supervised setting. The cost is $5 per dog. Thursday nights include Ask the Trainer Resource, where pranaDOGS trainer, Marcy Eckhardt provides free guidance and expertise to basic questions and dog issues. This event is weather-permitting.

Junior Golf Camp to be held in June

The 2016 Hillcrest Junior Golf Camp is scheduled for June 6-9. Parents may sign their children up for this introduction to golf.

Registration will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hillcrest Golf Shop. All pertinent information about the camp will be presented during registration. Parents are encouraged to attend and ask questions. The cost of the camp is $20. All equipment is provided. PGA professionals will teach the camp which is open to children ages 6-17.

City weed spraying starts Wednesday

Spraying will start Wednesday as part of the city of Durango’s noxious weed abatement program. The areas to be sprayed, weather permitting, include: Oxbow Park and Preserve and Horse Gulch.

Kiwanis Club to meet Thursday

The Kiwanis Club of Durango welcomes Peter Butler of the Animas River Stakeholders as guest speaker at noon Thursday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. Guests are welcome.

Adaptive Sports holds volunteer training

Adaptive Sports Association will hold its summer program trainings this month. ASA is a nonprofit sports and recreation outfitter for people with disabilities. Volunteers are needed to assist in daily programming including whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, camping, rock climbing, fishing and more.

Training is free, and no prior experience is necessary.

Volunteer canoe and kayak training will run May 25 and June 3. Rafting training will run May 26 and June 1. Cycling training will run June 2.
