AJ’s Greenhouse celebrates spring

AJ’s Greenhouse will host its annual seasonal opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the greenhouse, 60 East Owen Road, near Three Springs.

The event will feature a free lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., live music and giveaways.

Learn about our early efforts to electrify

The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host Sara Porterfield’s presentation on the region’s early development of electrical power at 6 p.m. Monday in the Lyceum Room.

Porterfield’s presentation is called “Supplying Light: The Western Colorado Power Company in the San Juan Mountains.” In this talk, Porterfield will discuss her experience during the past academic year of organizing part of the Western Colorado Power Company collection and her observations on how the development of this region’s electrical power infrastructure illustrates the complicated relationship between the human and natural worlds.

Porterfield is the center’s inaugural doctoral fellow in Southwestern history. Porterfield has spent the 2014-2015 academic year in residence at the center performing dissertation research and writing, in addition to teaching in the college’s department of history.

Medical directives clinic available

Colorado Legal Services & Southwest Bar Volunteer Legal Aid will present a free clinic to complete advanced medical directives, including a living will, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Free pizza and drinks will be provided.

Shocking method to keep ursines away

To help educate residents on the use of electric fencing to deter bears from chicken coops, beehives, livestock, fruit trees and more, Bear Smart Durango, CSU Extension and Gallagher Fence will host a free demonstration of electric fencing to keep bears away from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the CSU Extension Office, La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Dale Klotz with Gallagher Fence, along with local electric fencing vendors, will be on hand to answer questions and a light lunch, and beverages will be provided courtesy of Agritek Fence, Basin Co-Op and Tractor Supply.

Learn to deal with workers-comp costs

Pinnacol Assurance and Mountain West Insurance and Financial Services will host a seminar on managing worker’s compensation costs from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

The seminar will address how worker’s compensation premiums are calculated, the variables that impact the premiums and tools to implement to manage and mitigate overall costs. This seminar will benefit office managers, controllers, chief financial officers and business owners who manage workers’ compensation and risk-management programs.
