Covering crops topic of gardening talk

“Cover Cropping for Soil Health” will be the first in a free gardening series that will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Animas Valley Grange Hall, 7271 County Road 203.

The grange is sponsoring a series of informative talks by local experts with the first by Mia Carrasco-Songer of the Southwest Garden Project. She is manager of the Ohana Kuleana Community Garden. Her talk will be about the benefits of cover cropping, including selection of appropriate crops for particular seasons and purposes. The basics of soil health will be covered with why cultivating a living soil is best to give all plants a proper start.

The series will continue once each month by various local experts under sponsorship of the grange. The grange will provide refreshments.

LPEA candidates to host get-together

Britt Bassett, District 3, and Heather Erb, District 4, two incumbent La Plata Electric Association board members working for a clean energy future running for re-election, will host a meet-and-greet event from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Avenue.

Bassett, Erb and members of the Sustainability Alliance of Southwest Colorado will discuss local energy issues, the candidates and SASCO. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served including beer from Bottom Shelf Brewery in Bayfield.

‘TLC for FLC’ to raise money

“TLC for FLC,” Fort Lewis College’s premier fundraiser for student scholarships and faculty grants, will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday in the FLC Ballroom.

The event will include a dinner and auction.

Celebrate Arbor Day at community garden

An Arbor Day Celebration and Workday will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ohana Kuleana Community Garden, 564 E. 30th St.

Projects will include planting fruit trees, berry bushes and asparagus; maintaining swale pathways; chop and drop the cover crop; get the tool shed ready; and finish the wheelchair-accessible raised bed. There will be projects for all ages and ability levels. Water and snacks will be provided.

Sacred Heart to host spaghetti dinner

Sacred Heart Parish, 254 East Fifth Ave., will host its 41st annual spaghetti supper from 5 to 8 p.m. April 25.

The cost is $10 for adults 12 and older, $5 for children younger than 12, and free for children younger than 6. The menu will include spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, pizzelli cookies and drinks.

Trails 2000 hosts trail-crew workshop

Trails 2000 and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado will offer a training program for trail crew leaders from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 25 and 26 in Durango.

The two-day Crew Leader Training will introduce the fundamentals of successful volunteer crew management for the construction and maintenance of sustainable trails, offered through Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado’s Outdoor Stewardship Institute. Course includes classroom sessions, field exercises and role playing to introduce construction/maintenance of sustainable trails, leadership strategies and techniques, tool use and safety. All trainees receive a crew leader manual, set of quick reference cards and other materials that make for a successful crew-leadership experience. Information specific to location, etc. will be sent after registration.
