Water group has two meetings Saturday

The La Plata West Water Authority has scheduled two meetings Saturday to explain plans and answer questions about a potable-water system in the southwest corners of La Plata County.

The meetings are scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Breen Community Center and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School.

Knights of Columbus to host fish fry

The Sacred Heart Parish and the Knights of Columbus will host a fish fry from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Parish Hall, 254 East Fifth Ave.

LGBTQ center to host dinner, movie

Identity Inc., the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer community center in Farmington, New Mexico, will host dinner and a movie at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Dinner will include spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, and a drink. The movie will be “Pride,” which was nominated for a Golden Globe best picture award this year. Admission is $5. Identity Inc. is at 218 West Main in Farmington.

Resolving allergies to be discussed

A “Resolving Allergies with Advanced Allergy Therapeutics” presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Daybreak Rotary looks at incarceration

Tekla Dennison Miller, former Michigan warden of a men’s maximum security and a women’s multi-level prison, will talk to Daybreak Rotarians about prisons and prisoners at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Tekla is the author of two novels, Life Sentences and Inevitable Sentences and three memoirs, The Warden Wore Pink, A Bowl of Cherries and Mother Rabbit. She is a national speaker on criminal justice and women’s issues. The public is invited.

Bike maintenance clinic to be held

Mountain Bike Specialists will host a free bike maintenance clinic from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at 949 Main Ave.

Darian Harvey will be the instructor. Topics to be covered will be care and cleaning of a bike, lubing the chain, and how to fix a flat.

Volunteer naturalist training offered

Durango Nature Studies will host its spring Volunteer Naturalist Training for its Children Discovering Nature and Exploring Science in Nature Programs on these dates:

From 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 20 and 21 at the Nature Center.

Participants will become fully qualified volunteer naturalists, ready to lead science-based hikes for kids in kindergarten, first-, third-, and eighth-grades on topics such as plants, animals, insects, weather and water.

Volunteers will receive a manual as part of the training. School programs will take place at the Durango Nature Center and volunteers will choose the dates they are available. No prior experience is necessary. Fort Lewis College internship credits are available.
