Big Brothers, Sisters seeks volunteers

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado will host these volunteer orientations at 72 Suttle St., Suite 1:

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. April 21.

People will learn about being a Big, ask questions and see if this is a good fit.

Kilpatrick to teach Free Kids Yoga

Free Kids Yoga will take place from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Pediatric Associates of Durango, 1199 Main Ave., No. 205.

The class will be taught by Joy Kilpatrick, and it is open to children ages 3 to 7. This ongoing class is free the first Wednesday of the every month.

HELP local time bank to host free Intro 101

Hour Exchange La Plata, or HELP, the local time bank, will host a free introductory talk at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.

An orientation for new members will follow the talk at 6:30 p.m.

Gwaltney next to host Kelly Lecture Series

Fort Lewis College’s Reece Kelly Lecture Series will present “The Glory of Their Deeds: Honor, Commemoration and Public History in America’s Overseas Military Cemeteries” by William W. Gwaltney at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Noble Hall, Room 130 at FLC.

Gwaltney is Director of Interpretation and Visitor Services for the American Battle Monuments Commission in Paris, France. His lecture will include a discussion of his work in the operating and maintaining of American cemeteries and memorials in foreign countries, as well as how he helps bring history to life through those places.

Get your veggies at Old Fort Farm Stand

The Old Fort Farm Stand will be on campus from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday inside the Student Union.

The stand will have potatoes, yellow onions, zucchini bread, pumpkin bread, pestos, roasted poblano chiles, roasted green chiles, dehydrated onions, spinach, radishes, arugula, mixed greens, grass-fed beef and local pork.

DHS Base Camp debates Friday

The Durango High School student group, Base Camp, will debate a variety of controversial issues from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio.

Topics will include hydroelectric dams, fracking, coal and uranium mining, nuclear power and the local and universal consequences they may create.

DHS Student Council keen on giving back

Durango High School Student Council will host the fourth annual Big Event Durango from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 25.

This event will be a day of service and giving back to the community from Durango teenagers and other volunteers. Students will go around the community in teams, helping businesses, nonprofit and individual citizens by doing tasks.

Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. at DHS and receive a sack lunch. People in need of assistance may fill out an application at http://dhs.durangoschools.org/ or at the DHS Welcome Center in the front office of DHS from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applications must be turned in to the DHS front office by April 15.

Annual Water Seminar discusses ag’s future

The Southwestern Water Conservation District’s annual Water Seminar will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

A broad range of topics will be covered, including Colorado River Basin contingency planning efforts, agriculture’s future, the state water plan and water-conservation strategies. Registration is $40 at the door.

Buy bluebird boxes for Parks and Wildlife

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Museum volunteer group has cedar bluebird boxes available for sale for $25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the CPW Service Center, near 15th St. and Main Ave., (co-located with the Durango Fish Hatchery).

Donations will help volunteers maintain the Wildlife Visitor Center. The museum will open to the public beginning May 15.

Kilpatrick to teach FamilyTime Yoga

FamilyTime Yoga for families/caregivers with children ages 4 to 10 with Joy Kilpatrick will take place from 1 to 2:15 p.m. April 12 at YogaDurango, 1485 Florida Road, No. 201.

This ongoing class is offered the first Sunday of the month.
