Calling all Class of 1970 for Durango High School

The Durango High School Class of 1970 is searching for classmates who graduated from the school in 1970.

People who attended school from 1967 to 1970 are invited to the reunion.

April brings attention to distracted drivers

The Colorado Department of Transportation is partnering with the Colorado State Patrol to support nationwide efforts in April to end distracted driving, as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The public is encouraged to join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter, using #DroptheDistraction to discuss creative ways to combat distracted driving in everyday life.

The National Safety Council recommends drivers taking action to combat distracted driving do the following:

Stop using cellphones while driving.

Recognize that hands-free devices offer little safety benefit.

Understand the dangers of cognitive distraction to the brain.

Tell others about the dangers of distracted driving.

Hozhoni Days at FLC honors tribal cultures

Hozhoni Days will return to Fort Lewis College with these events:

The Miss Hozhoni Pageant traditional food presentation will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Union Ballroom.

Each year, a new Miss Hozhoni is chosen from the FLC student body to represent the college’s Native American students, as well as the Wanbli Ota student organization.

Miss Hozhoni Pageant traditional and modern talent showcases will take place at 6 p.m. April 15 in the Student Union Ballroom.

A free round dance will take place at 6 p.m. April 16 in the Student Union Ballroom.

The Hozhoni Days Pow Wow will take place April 17-18 in Whalen Gym at FLC.

The winner of the Miss Hozhoni Pageant will be crowned April 18.

Hozhoni Days celebrates the more than 150 Native American and Alaska Native tribes and villages represented in the college’s student body.

Go take a hike under the Horse Gulch Pink Moon

Durango Nature Studies’ will host a Full Moon Hike under the Pink Moon from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Horse Gulch.

The hike is free for members and $10 for nonmembers. Participants will learn about natural history, nocturnal animals, local landforms and moon facts and legends.

Native Roots to host free outdoor gardening class

Native Roots Garden Center will host a free class on outdoor gardening at noon Saturday at the center, 26266 U.S. Highway 160.

Participants will learn the procedures for planning, planting and growing an outdoor vegetable garden.

The class will last about two hours.
