Breweries embark on annual bike tour

Craft brewery owners and employees from Avery Brewing, Ska Brewing, Boulder Beer, Epic Brewing, Great Divide Brewing and Left Hand Brewing are banding together for the 7th annual BoulDurango Bike Ride.

They will be cycling 436 miles from Durango to Boulder, stopping for beers at breweries and pubs after each leg.

The tour will begin around 7:30 a.m. Monday morning at Ska Brewing, with a stop that evening at Montanya Distillers Tasting Room in Silverton.

The event benefits Cyclists 4 Community.

The ride takes six days and goes through some of Colorado’s most grueling road terrain, with a total elevation gain of 9,473 meters.

You can view the route via bit.ly/BoulDurango16 to see the elevation gain and average grade per segment, and can also keep tabs on the riders via #BoulDurango.

The public is invited to meet the riders for a “beer or three” at their end-of-day watering hole.

Parking restrictions at Pass Creek trailhead

Public parking will be limited for two weeks at the Pass Creek trailhead in late July and early August, but the popular trail will not be closed while Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association conducts maintenance at its Coal Bank Pass Communication Site.

Tri-State will be replacing an aging transformer at the substation, located adjacent to the trailhead parking area on Coal Bank Pass off U.S. Highway 550.

On staging days (July 25 and Aug. 9), the entire access road and parking area will be barricaded and closed so that equipment can be maneuvered in and out of the area. Travelers on Highway 550 should expect occasional traffic delays.

From July 26 to Aug. 8, a small parking area will remain open adjacent to the trailhead to accommodate 15-20 vehicles, but parking will not be allowed along the access road into the parking area. In addition, the connection from the parking area to the communications towers will be barricaded.

The Colorado Department of Transportation reminds motorists that parking along the sides of U.S. Highway 550 is not allowed; however, a small amount of additional parking will be available across the highway at the Coal Bank Rest Area.
