Longtime area resident Franklin Anderson receives public service award

Colorado State University Alumni added Franklin W. Anderson to ‘50-year club’
Franklin Anderson and his wife, Martha, have been married for 57 years. Anderson received the 2017 Outstanding Recognition Award for Public Service from Colorado State University Alumni Association.

It was recently announced that longtime Southwest Colorado resident, Cmdr. Franklin W. Anderson, received an Outstanding Recognition Award on Oct. 13 from the Colorado State University Alumni Association for his more than 50 years of public service.

Anderson grew up in Pagosa Springs and joined the Navy in February 1957, a year after he graduated from Colorado A&M, which is now Colorado State University.

He spent 21 years in the Navy. For his service during the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Legion of Merit as commanding officer of SEAL Team One, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. Anderson was assigned to research and development of equipment for use by special warfare forces until he retired in May 1977. He had spent more time in Naval special warfare than other U.S. Navy officer.

Anderson returned Southwest Colorado with his wife, Martha, whom he met while stationed in San Diego, and together they raised four children: Gisela, Linda, Warren and Wayne. They have been married for 57 years.

In addition to national and state affairs, he has been active in several organizations in Southwest Colorado, including the Southeast Planning District for La Plata County, Pine River Canal and Farm Bureau, 4-H clubs in the community, hospital and planning districts, budget committees and more. In the mid-1980s, he was named Colorado Outstanding Agrarian of the year.

“He lives quiet life, still ranching, and spends most of his time visiting with grandkids and family,” said his daughter, Linda Anderson.

Although at this point he has sold his cattle, Anderson continues to live at his ranch home in the Allison-Tiffany area.

The CSU Alumni Association gives three “50-year club” awards to state residents each year for career achievement, distinguished achievement and public service. Anderson was the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Recognition Award for Public Service.
