Majors are done; tournament play still heating up

This Jimmy Walker was DYN-O-MITE in winning the 98th PGA Championship last weekend in the saturated grounds of Baltusrol. A little bit of luck never hurt anyone – like a sand trap birdie followed by another birdie on the back side.

Even an astonishing and pressure-packed eagle by defending champion Jason Day on the final hole made the final putt by Walker on 18 one to remember.

It was quite a year for the first-timers at golf’s four major tournaments and elevated the game for years to come. Congratulations to a gracious winner and runner-up; sportsmanship at its best.

More congratulations goes out to Glen Larson of Austin, Texas, after he aced the par-3 ninth hole at Hillcrest Golf Club on July 30th. Larson, who was witnessed by locals Ken and Abbey Flint, used an 8-iron to fly the shot past the hole and spin it back into the cup. That’s how it’s done!

Dalton Ranch Golf Club

Let’s kick in some more tournament play this weekend as The Bugler will be contested Aug. 4-6 at Dalton Ranch.

Then, Aug. 9-10, it is the Dalton Ranch Golf Club Ladies Club Championship. Get with your respective pro shops for sign-up information.

Widening our horizons, we find the Dalton Ranch Junior Club Championship coming up Aug. 16th.

Please remember the Rally for the Cure Tournament, a grassroots program to educate women about breast cancer and a timely annual reminder for screening, will be held Aug. 17th at Dalton Ranch. The entry fee is $20 per person, and the standard DRWGA green fees and cart rental will apply for this event. The format is a four-person team with two best-balls and 80-percent handicaps. The field is limited to 40 players, so give the pro shop a call at 247-8774 to sign up.

Hillcrest Golf Club

The Hillcrest Adult/Junior Tournament-presented by Coldwell Banker Heritage House Realtors will be held Aug. 7th.

The Ska Brewing-Hillcrest Club Championships, combining both the women’s and men’s seasonal titles on one weekend, will be held Aug. 20-21. There’s some great golf action right on our doorstep in the next several weeks.
