Thursdays 10:30-11 a.m.: Family Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities perfect for children ages 0-5 and their parents and caregivers.

Fridays 10:30-11 a.m.: Baby Storytime. A lapsit storytime for infants-18 months. Interactive fun with music, stories, fingerplays, counting rhymes and playtime. Babies should bring their parents or caregivers to join the fun.

Masks are highly encouraged for all events.

March 14 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Great Decisions: War Crimes. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has resulted in widespread charges of war crimes and calls for justice. But what exactly are war crimes? Presented by the League of Women Voters of La Plata County, Great Decisions is an annual nonpartisan briefing book that covers eight foreign policy topics.

March 14 5-6 p.m.: Women Who Tell Our Stories – Art Exhibit + Reception. Celebrate women’s history month with Durango’s Women Resource Center at this interactive art exhibit celebrating local women storytellers.

Scavenger hunt through the library snapping pics with your friends, discover what your leprechaun name is, and more luck o’ the Irish fun – plus karaoke, video games and snacks. Don’t forget to wear green. Really. Trust us on this. As a matter of fact, dressing as a leprechaun is highly encouraged. Registration required. For those in grades 6-12.

March 29 4-5 p.m. Teen Time: Climate Book Club. Join us in the Teen Library for a book club led by the Green Team at DHS. The book club will meet the last Wednesday of every month and discuss topics related to climate change and how teens can make a difference. This month, we’re talking about “Fuzzy Mud” by Louis Sachar. If you need a book, ask at the Teen Office. Everyone in grades 6-12 is welcome.

March 29 5:30-7 p.m.: Let’s Talk Little. Olga Little. Olga Schaaf Little was a renowned jack packer. She saved animals, mines and men. For 30 years, she led her burro team with much needed supplies into the La Plata Mountain mines and brought out silver and gold ore. Join Gay Kiene, from the Animas Museum, as she shares Olga’s adventure story in honor of Women’s History Month.

Gamer Club, 4-5 p.m.: Tabletop gaming, console video games, Roblox, Minecraft, Pokémon Go and more. Computers are provided, but gamers can bring their own laptop or Switches. This program is geared for grades three and older, but younger children are welcome to attend with a caregiver.

Grades K-2 After School Adventure Hour, 4-5 p.m.: Explore hands-on science, create Lego masterpieces and more.

Register for Transport

Arrange transport with the school district if you would like your child to ride the bus to the library after school. Parents or guardians of children below sixth grade must register their children in order for them to attend after school programs. Teen Programs

Tournament Tuesdays, 4-5 p.m.: Join a new tournament and play for prizes. Trivial Pursuit, spelling bees, card games, Guitar Hero/Injustice and more.

Weekly Programs
YOGA FOR ALL

Mondays and Wednesdays, 9-10 a.m.: This class combines the cool stillness of yin yoga and heat and flow of movement to create a balance that can be modified to work for every body. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged. Classes are on a donation basis. Taught by Colleen Theobald and Robin Rogers. MOUNTAINTOP MOVEMENT FITNESS CLASSES

These classes are hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more details.

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-8:50 a.m.: Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all the body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.

COMMUNITY KNITTING AND CROCHET GROUP, Sundays, 1-3 p.m.: All are welcome. Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or you would like to learn, we are happy to have you and will do our best to help you get started.

March 2, 9, 16, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.: Collage Class: Local artists Jan Chopra and Susan Brightman will teach a three week collage class. Collage is a visual representation made by assembling different forms, materials, and sources to create a unique piece of art. This course is open to students at all experience levels. March 2, 4-6 p.m.: County Commissioner Matt Salka Office Hours: La Plata County Commissioner Matt Salka will hold in-person office hours. Members of the public are invited to meet with him to discuss county issues of interest or concern. For more information, call 382-6219.

March 3, 6:30 p.m.: First Friday Flicks: Join us for a movie on the big screen the first Friday of each month. In March we’ll be showing the 2022 film “Elvis” (PG-13).

March 6, 10-11 a.m.: Rambling Readers: Meet at the gate to Saul’s Creek just off U.S. Highway 160 in Bayfield to walk and talk books. Call the library at 884-2222. ext. 1, for directions.

March 6, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writers’ Group: No rules, just writing. Each month, a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

March 8, 2-3:30 p.m.: Bookmarks Book Club: Open to all adults. The library provides the books, the discussion leader and a place to gather outside. Stop by the library to request a copy of the March book (“Miss Benson’s Beetle” by Rachel Joyce).

March 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m.: An exhibition of art by Bayfield middle and high schoolers from the classrooms of Kayleigh Weir and Kathleen Neal. The works will be on display until the end of the March.

March 11, 4:30-5:30 p.m.: Cashflow: A financial literacy game night: Learn key financial strategies. Play Cashflow, a game that focuses on increasing financial I.Q. and sharpening investing savvy and skills. This event is designed to introduce you to the world of real estate investing and financial literacy.

March 14, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center: Create two beautiful handmade cards. 100% free.

March 15, 6:15 p.m.: Regular monthly meeting of the Board of Trustees.

March 18, 10 a.m.-noon: Pine River Garden Club Seed Exchange: Bring extra seeds to trade and join the Pine River Garden Club and your neighbors for a morning of garden stories, advice and seeds. Bring small containers to transport seeds.

March 21 and 22, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: Babysitter Training: This two-day training course trains teens (12-18 years old) on basic child care, nutrition and an introductory understanding of early learning and social/emotional literacy skills. Training also features a full-day basic lifesaving course including CPR/First Aid training, allowing teens to receive official CPR/First Aid cards from the American Heart Association. Course fee is $30 and must be paid before the class. Cost for recertification is $20. Registration by March 17 required, stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1, to register.

March 21, 1-2:30 p.m.: A Death Cafe is a time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

March 23, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Spanish Conversation: Practice Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

March 24, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Pine River Senior Center Outreach: Books and DVDs available for check out, delivered to the Senior Center with an extended loan period (four weeks, rather than the standard one to three weeks) each month.

March 29, 6-7 p.m.: Intro to Baby Sign Language: An excellent way to communicate with your nonverbal child. Signing is also a powerful tool to help young toddlers lower their frustration levels. Learn the basics of signing with your baby or toddler.

Undeterred” Film Screening: Friday, March 3 at 6 p.m. Watch a documentary about a community resistance in the rural border town of Arivaca, Arizona. “Undeterred” is an intimate and unique portrait of how residents in a small rural community, caught in the crosshairs of global geopolitical forces, have mobilized to demand rights and to provide aid to injured, often time dying people funneled across a wilderness desert. Fort Lewis College professor Benjamin Wadell will facilitate and the filmmaker will join online after the screening for a discussion.

Family Literacy Night: Thursday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. : Let us take the work and planning out of family night and just give you the fun. We’ve got food and beverages the kids will love. A family fun craft project to take home after that will go along with our book of the night, “The Day the Crayons Quit.” Sign-up your family in advance by calling 563-9287.

Raised Garden Beds Informational Talk: Tuesday, March 14 at 6 p.m. : Make the best of your raised garden beds, with Darrin Parmenter from La Plata County Extension Office Horticulture/Small farms. Raised bed gardening is a simple technique that can improve the health and productivity of your garden. Raised beds have better soil structure and drainage, allowing the soil to warm up earlier in the season, and giving you a head start on spring. Free program, no sign up required.

Author Visit with Tekla Dennison-Miller: Friday, March 24 at 10 a.m.: Author of “The Warden Wore Pink” will read from her book and discuss her career as a corrections officer. Miller recalls her career in corrections in a series of anecdotal flashbacks, from her hiring as a probation officer to satisfy affirmative action guidelines to her retirement from the Michigan prison system as warden at the men’s maximum-security Huron Valley Prison.

Ongoing Events

Powerhouse Pass Program – Sunnyside Library and Fort Lewis Mesa Library have Powerhouse Passes available for check out at each library. The pass will allow you and your immediate family free entry to the Powerhouse Science Center. Passes can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Check Out State Parks Program – Fort Lewis and Sunnyside Libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Each pack includes a pass for free entry to Colorado state parks, binoculars, wildlife viewing guides and park information. The pack can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.
