Reoccurring Events

Wednesdays 11-11:30 a.m.: Preschool Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities. Perfect for children ages 3-5.

Wednesdays 3:30-5 p.m.: Youth Chess Club. Drop-in chess games in a friendly environment. For ages 7-17. All skill levels are welcome. Bring your own set or use one of ours.

Thursdays 11-11:30 a.m.: Toddler Storytime. Stories, songs, rhymes and other fun activities. Perfect for children ages 2-3.

Fridays 11-11:30 a.m.: Baby Storytime. A lap-sit storytime for infants-18 months. Interactive fun with music, stories, fingerplays, counting rhymes and playtime. Babies should bring their parents or caregivers to join the fun.

March 1, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: LEGO Club. Drop in to build, create and play with the library’s LEGO collection.

March 5, noon-1:30 p.m.: Health and Wellness Book Discussion at Turtle Lake Cafe. How do you explore themes of health and wellness as a reader? Let’s share a lunch as well as recommendations of books (and other media) that investigate the many facets of this topic including: physical health; mental, social and environmental health; community wellness; equity and justice. This event is free and no pre-reading is required. Registration is required.

March 6, 6-7:30 p.m.: Word Honey Poetry Workshop. Join us at The Hive’s indoor skatepark (1150 Main Ave. Suite A) for a poetry workshop.

March 8, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.: Friends of the Library Book Sale & Annual Meeting. Mark your calendars for our annual meeting at 9:15 a.m. in the library lobby. We’ll review the 2023 minutes for approval and provide a quick snapshot of our 2023 projects. The meeting should only take 15 minutes. The book sale will be held in the library’s program rooms.

March 8, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: LEGO Club. Drop in to build, create and play with the library’s LEGO collection.

March 9, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.: Friends of the Library Book Sale. Hardbacks are $1 and paperbacks two for $1. Plus, classic CDs and vintage books.

March 12, 11:45 a.m.-2 p.m.: Great Decisions. Presented by the League of Women Voters of La Plata County, Great Decisions is an annual nonpartisan briefing book that covers eight foreign policy topics.

March 12, 5-6:30 p.m.: WRC Women’s History Month Exhibit and Reception. Celebrate local women with a fun reception put on by the Women’s Resource Center of Durango. Learn about local leaders uplifting diversity, equity and inclusion. Poetry reading by Esther Belin, Poet Laureate of Durango.

March 13, 5:30-7 p.m.: Intro to the Irish Gaelic Language. Learn a bit about the Irish language and its history. Leave with cúpla foca, a few phrases, to use on St. Patrick’s Day. No previous experience necessary. Seating is limited, so register online.

March 13, 6:15-7:45 p.m.: Writers & Scribblers. Writers and Scribblers is a group for writers of all kinds to learn, practice and share the art and craft of writing.

March 14, 4-5:30 p.m.: Crafternoons (for adults). Crafting isn’t just fun, it’s fundamental for mental health, relaxation and happiness. Explore our awesome craft supplies each month. Follow a suggested project or free play and create your own masterpiece. This space is reserved for adults (17 and older). This month: Create your own prayer flags.

March 15, 3:30-4:30 p.m.: STEAM Lab. Build, explore, create, and problem-solve. Join us for fun STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) based activities.

March 18, 5-6:30 p.m.: Women’s History Month: Diversity Panel. Join us for a panel discussion with local women leaders. Latin appetizers and aguas frecas will be provided. Bilingual simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

March 19,10:30 a.m.-noon: Early Literacy Playdate.

March 19, 6-8 p.m.: Life’s Ever-changing Cycle with Brooke Smith. If change is the only thing we’re ever guaranteed, why is it so shocking when it happens to us? In this workshop, learn about the three types of catalytic changes we face, how to honor the transition so you don’t land right back in square one, how to use the process to accelerate your new life, and how to create a partnership between who you are right now and who you are becoming.

March 20, 6-7:30 p.m.: Word Honey Poetry Open Mic Night. Join us at the library for a night of Open Mic Poetry. Be brave and read and original work or come out to support and enjoy local artists.

March 26, 11 a.m.-noon: Kindergarten Readiness Play and Learn Workshop. The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County and Durango Public Library present a six-part series of free workshops for parents/caregivers and their preschool-age children. The workshops will focus on key categories of kindergarten readiness and include activities that support growth in early literacy, math, motor and social emotional skills. Preschool-age children will receive a free book and other goodies to help support their readiness to thrive in school (supplies limited). To get the most out of these workshops, we encourage attendance at all sessions.

Adult Knitting Club at Sunnyside – Fridays at 3 p.m. Bring your knitting or other portable craft project and join us for this fun and social group (all ages welcome).

Kids Krafternoon Adventures

Both Sunnyside and Fort Lewis Mesa Libraries will offer Kids Krafternoon Adventures on Tuesdays through the end of April. The crafty adventures will take place at Fort Lewis Mesa Library on the first and third Tuesdays, while Sunnyside’s adventures will happen on the second and fourth. Upcoming sessions include: Pokemon Club and Fab Food Fun. Kids may sign up for one or all of the sessions. There is no cost. Complete and return the registration form on our website.

Powerhouse Pass Program

Sunnyside Library and Fort Lewis Mesa Library have Powerhouse Passes available for check out at each library. The pass will allow you and your immediate family free entry to the Powerhouse Science Center. Passes can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Check Out State Parks Program

Fort Lewis and Sunnyside Libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Each pack includes a pass for free entry to Colorado state parks, binoculars, wildlife viewing guides and park information. The pack can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.
