Mean Moose rough up BHS

Goodbye, top-10 rankings.

The Bayfield High School basketball team lost for the first time in five games Tueday in Alamosa, falling 63-42 to the Mean Moose.

BHS (7-2, 0-1 Intermountain League) was ranked in the top-10 by both the Associated Press and CHSAA, but the loss likely will move Alamosa (7-4, 1-0 IML) back into the polls after receiving votes this week.

No Wolverine scored in double digits, but Trevor Gabbard led the team with nine points.

Taed Heydinger and Zane Phelps both scored eight, and Phelps grabbed nine rebounds.

A glacial first half sunk BHS early.

The Wolverines scored only two points in the first quarter and were down 31-13 at halftime.

“We got off to a poor start. We did not match their intensity or execution,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “That’s on me. I need my team better prepared to match that intensity and do a better job of executing.”

The second half went better.

BHS only scored three fewer points after halftime.

Ryan Brubacher led the Mean Moose with 26 points.

“There’s a truism we don’t always like: Through adversity, we grow,” Lehnus said. “We will progress from this. We will respond to this.”

The Wolverines play Monte Vista at 7 p.m. Friday in Monte Vista, giving them a quick chance to grow and progress.

“I’ve got a good feeling that we will respond,” Lehnus said. “Credit goes to (Alamosa), round one. We must learn and grow to reach where they’re at.”
