Miners can’t cool DHS boys lacrosse

Demons’ freshman goalie ‘awesome’ in victory

Still hot.

The Durango High School boys lacrosse team overcame a tough Telluride effort Tuesday to make it six in a row with a 9-4 win over the Miners.

The Demons scored six fourth-quarter goals, shooting 6-of-6 after leading by just one, 3-2 after the third quarter.

DHS trailed 2-1 at halftime.

“Looking a little sloppy and weren’t really taking care of the ball very well,” DHS head coach John Robinette said.

In the final frame, Wesley Komick scored a hat trick to help lift the Demons.

Jared Cook also scored three goals and added two assists in the second half, and Trevor Gabbard tallied four assists to go with a team-leading 10 groundballs.

The Demons couldn’t have done it without their defense.

In the first half, DHS got tagged with a consecutive illegal stick and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for six nonreleasable penalty minutes.

Even with junior varsity freshman Henry Dorr in goal, the Demons’ defense allowed just one goal in those six minutes.

Dorr finished with 14 saves, including six in the fourth quarter against 11 Miners’ shots.

“He did awesome,” Robinette said.

Starting keeper Walker Brown was out for a violation of team rules, and backup Robert Moore missed the game with an injury.

Telluride outshot DHS 29-28.

The Demons will look to extend their winning streak to seven with two final home games to close out the season. They will play Eagle Mountain at 4 p.m. Friday, then Glenwood Springs at 11 a.m., both games at DHS Stadium.
