Navajo Trail Open goes as expected: Tight and great

Another great finish to the Navajo Trail Open, and would you have expected differently?

It always seems to come down to the final hole – as nothing is in the bag, or the cup, so to speak. Congrats to Jimmy Gunn, and kudos to Devin Schreiner for a gutsy performance. This event still proves to be riveting and mystical. Later in this article, I will list the top finishers in the amateur flights.

For now, I must tell you about the 9th annual Curt Christiansen Memorial Golf Tournament, conducted by the Pine Valley Church, at Hillcrest Golf Club on Sunday. This is a scramble event with a shotgun start at 2 p.m.

A 2014 car is up for grabs for the first hole-in-one recorded in the tournament on the 9th hole. The cost to enter is $60 per player, which includes greens fee, cart and a box lunch. Hillcrest members can enter for just $30.

Proceeds from the event go to help single parents in the area. The sign-up deadline is Thursday and can be done by calling the Pine Valley Church at 884-7196.

The 2013 Columbine Classic tournament is underway today at the Glacier Club and continues Thursday at Dalton Ranch Golf Club. One of the fun sidebars to this event is the “ball drop” by the Flight for Life helicopter at 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

You can still purchase a fundraising numbered golf ball up until the drop on Hole 10 Thursday morning. Give the DRGC pro shop at call at 247-8774 for more info on the ball drop.

The Walmart of Durango Yellow Ball Challenge will be played Saturday at Hillcrest. There is $500 in added prize purse and an entry fee of $35 per person. You can choose your own 4-person team with 100 percent handicaps with flights. The format is a rotating yellow ball score plus scramble.

Tee times begin at 9 a.m. and scoring will be net only. Call Hilllcrest at 247-1499 to see if there is space for your team.
