New Face supports the arts elegantly

Members of the New Face Productions committee Diane Welle, Carol Salomon, Phyllis Max, Chairwoman Regina Hogan, Deb Wright and Sandra LeFevre are on top of the world at “TOP of the Creek” at the end of September as they raised money to support adult arts programming at the Durango Arts Center.

Two of my favorite exhibits of the last five years, TOP Jewels Jewelry Design Exhibition and the International Textile Show, both at the Durango Arts Center, came about because of New Face Productions.

So when I hear they’re actively fundraising, I can’t wait to see what comes next.

On the evening of the dramatic blood moon eclipse at the end of September, the energetic and creative members of New Face presented a fundraiser called “TOP of the Creek” at the home of Alice and Eric Foultz. The Foultzes have completely restored the Barr Hermosa Orchards, longtime home of Roberta Barr, and the creek in the name is Hermosa Creek. The evening included art, with a dinner and pop-up exhibit, to benefit adult programming for exhibitions, theater and education at the DAC.

Alice Carrington Foultz curated a pop-up exhibit in the remodeled Honey House featuring works by regional artists including Elizabeth Kinahan, Minna Jain, Miki Harder, Shay M. Lopez, Tim Kapustka and more.

The evening began with some cool jazz courtesy of the faculty and students from the Stillwater Foundation with Executive Director Jeroen van Tyn. (They were invited to perform at the Telluride Jazz Festival this year, and that’s saying something.)

An elegant five-course meal was prepared by The Yellow Carrot, including the artfully themed Seafood Juxtaposition featuring salmon and halibut braids and a Carne Caricature, an osso bucco and truffle ragout.

The Wine Merchant rose to the challenge and selected the perfect pairings to accompany each course.

Dr. W. Arthur and Biddie Porter sponsored Fort Lewis College art students Lexis Loeb and Daisy Latta to attend the event. Other evening sponsors included Ann Griffith Ash, Christopher Hill and Deborah and Hugh Miller.

The evening concluded with an auction of just two special items: a week at the Fairmont Heritage Place in Ghirardelli Square in the heart of San Francisco, donated by Diane and Bernie Welle; and a weekend at Willowtail Springs in Mancos, donated by Peggy and Lee Cloy.

NFP committee members include Chairwoman Regina Hogan, Carol Salomon, Diane Welle, JM Jones, Phyllis Max, Sandra LeFevre, Kapustka, Deb Wright, Christina Erteszek and Jill Schuman. The group was established in 2010 and most recently sponsored the performances of “Rent,” and an adult education series in addition to the aforementioned TOP Jewels, which receives a Butler “ooh, là, là!”

What do you know about your family and how they came to America? Do you want to know more?

The Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society, in Partnership with the Durango Public Library, is sponsoring a free event called Discover Your Story from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the library. Society members will be available for one-on-one consultations – although time is limited, so organize your questions and paperwork in advance – a beginning genealogy class will be offered, as will information about resources available for the quest. I found a book researching my father’s family back to the early 1600s in England this year, and it’s a treasure trove of information.

And after you learn where you came from, head over to the La Plata County Fairgrounds for the Durango Lions Club’s annual Chili and Handicrafts Festival. The chili is delish, and it’s a good way to get a head start on holiday shopping. Chili’s served from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
