FARMINGTON –Faculty members at a New Mexico college have voted to begin the process of unionization and collective bargaining with administrative officials amid increasing faculty turnover.

The Farmington Daily Times reports that 87 out of 147 full-time faculty members at San Juan College have voted in favor of unionization.

Officials said 41 members voted against the effort.

Some faculty said the faculty turnover rate has increased and there have been multiple terminations not properly addressed by the college’s administration.

Faculty members said collective bargaining could give them a seat at the table to discuss their concerns and improve the college for the students.

Executive Vice President Edward DesPlas said he is listening and he is not trying to invalidate concerns.

The San Juan College Labor Board is set to certify the results of the vote.
