New Year’s won’t halt our First Thursday

Phyllis Stapler’s “Coyote” is the featured artwork for a previous First Thursday Art Walk at Sorrel Sky Gallery. The gallery will be open for the January First Thursday Art Walk despite the fact that it falls on New Year’s Day.

The first Thursday of every month is a day when locals and tourists alike can tour local art galleries, many of which launch new exhibits that day, while enjoying snacks, and in some instances, live music.

But what happens when the First Thursday Art Walk falls on a holiday such as, say, New Year’s Day?

First Thursday will go on, according to a news release from the city of Durango. The only difference for the first walk of 2015 is that not all galleries will be open.

“We won’t be here,” said Jeannie Berger, membership and volunteer coordinator at the Durango Arts Center. “It’s a day off for us.”

But Sorrel Sky Gallery, which was busy on New Year’s Eve, will be open for the event, which will run from 5 to 7 p.m.

Anyone who enjoys strolling and perusing art and wants to escape a house where football games dominate should dress warmly. The forecast for Thursday is a high in the 20s and a low Thursday night from minus 5 to minus 15.

Brrrr.
