Commissioner Lachelt to meet public

County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt will hold her monthly meet the public session from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, June 20 in the County Fairgrounds Extension Building Pine Room. All are welcome to come with questions or comments about county issues.

Tour S. America without leaving Bayfield

Take a tour of Brazil, Argentina, Cape Verde, and Madeira this summer without spending a dime! This free seven week Adult Summer Reading Program starts at the Pine River Library on June 21 and will continue every Tuesday through Aug. 3. Programs are from 7 to 9 p.m.

The series will summarize Mark Curran's experience on board the National Geographic Explorer as cultural presenter for Lindblad Expeditions - National Geographic in March and April, 2016. Attendees will be introduced to Buenos Aires, a Welsh Colony in Patagonia, Rio de Janeiro, the UNESCO wildlife reserve of Fernando de Noronha, the volcano in Fogo, Cape Verde Republic, and beautiful Madeira Island.

Curran is a retired professor from Arizona State University where he taught Spanish and Portuguese and respective cultures. His specialty was Brazil, its literature and folklore.

There is no admission fee, no homework and no exams. Come as you are and have fun!

Magic show to be held at library

The Magic of Eli returns to the Pine River Library on Friday, June 24. Eli is an award-winning magician from Toledo, Ohio. His show is loaded with comedy, crazy machete juggling, audience participation and Eli's version of Houdini's classic Metamorphosis, a lightning fast illusion that is extremely physically challenging.

The Magic of Eli will be performed at 10 a.m. Friday, June 24 at the library.

Church to host basketball camp

Ignacio Community Church will host the Focused Basketball Camp on June 24 and 25 at the Ignacio High School gym. A session for elementary children is from 1 to 4 p.m. June 24. Middle and high school youth can attend sessions from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. June 25. The cost is $10. The camp will feature Bay Forrest, a 6'10" evangalist who played for the Phoenix Suns from 1977 to 1980, as well as Joe Odhiambo, billed as the world's best ball handler. There will be a free demonstration and mission session at 6 p.m. Saturday at the high school.

Registration forms for the camp are available at SunUte Community Center, the Ignacio Post Office and Ignacio Community Library.

Bayberry Jam and Pine River Shares potluck are June 25

Bayfield's Eagle Park will be busy on Saturday, June 25, with both the Bayberry Jam music event and the Pine River Shares monthly potluck happening.

Bayberry Jam is a fundraiser for the BAAM school music boosters group. It will feature live music, food, beer, and games from noon to 7 p.m. Bands scheduled to play include the Transplants, Jelly Belly Boogie Band, Callie Young, Outlier and Mile Marker Four. Admission is $10. Bring your blankets or camp chairs.

The monthly potluck is free, and all valley residents are invited. Bring a side dish or dessert, and your plates and utensils. It's from 5 to 7 p.m., and volunteers are always welcome earlier to help with set-up, or after with clean-up. For information call 884-4747.

Lipbone Redding to perform on June 25

Musician and storyteller Lipbone Redding will return to Ignacio on Saturday, June 25, for A Day on the Grass at the ELHI Community Center (old elementary school downtown). The event runs from 3 to 7 p.m. Along with Redding's performance, there will be food, Ruby the balloon twister, and face painting. The event is $10 for adults, free for kids under 12. There will be a free music workshop for kids at 3:00. The event is sponsored by KSUT and is a fundraiser for Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center educational programs.

Library to offer self-defense class

Pine River Library is offering "Self-Defense 101" on Saturday, June 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. This two hour course will be taught by Shiann Swapp, ?Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Purple Belt and kickboxing and BJJ instructor at the Durango Martial Arts Academy.

Swapp teaches leverage, technique, and timing so almost anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can use these techniques and make them work against larger opponents. She will be focusing on basic ground defense (how to defend yourself if you get knocked to the ground), grip breaking, and grip diverting, as well as some other basic techniques like escaping choke holds.

"Learning self-defense gives you more than just the skills to defend yourself, it builds confidence, self-respect, self-discipline, improves physical conditioning, and overall creates a positive influence in your life," Swapp says.

The course fee is $20, and pre-registration is required. Call or stop by the library information desk to sign up.
