No. 10 Montezuma-Cortez gets sweep of No. 13 Bayfield volleyball

Errors hurt Wolverines against Panthers

The Montezuma-Cortez High School volleyball team continued to show its might at home Tuesday.

With a 3-0 win, the Panthers swept the regular-season meetings with Class 3A Intermountain League rival Bayfield, having won six of the seven sets played.

Tuesday night in Cortez, the 10th-ranked Panthers (7-0, 5-0 IML) won 26-24, 25-18 and 25-23 to drop the No. 13 Wolverines to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in league.

“It was a great match,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “Point for point, Cortez and Bayfield rallied strong throughout the match. In the end, M-CHS had the finishing points.”

BHS was led by seven kills each from Brooke Merchant, Emily Nelson and Macee Schulz. Myrah Abdullah-Boehm had 10 digs, while Nelson finished with nine digs and three aces.

Foutz said the Wolverines hurt themselves with unforced attack errors throughout the match.

BHS will play two big home matches this week with Centauri slated to visit at 6 p.m. Friday and No. 8 Alamosa at 2 p.m. Saturday. BHS beat Centauri 3-1 earlier this season but fell 3-1 in Alamosa.
