Vote no on 2A. On the same day The Durango Herald supported taking money from the citizens and giving it to the city for housing, the Herald reported that the Colorado attorney general stated there is a lot of money out there specifically for this purpose.
The city, county, state and federal government have thrown a lot of money at housing, but no good solution has been found and most of the money given to communities sits unused. City Council is trying to buy votes by tying the excess revenue from the lodgers tax to what many would consider is a worthy cause.
However, as confirmed by Phil Weiser, throwing more money at housing, especially in Durango, where the city is flush with money, will not fix the problem. Instead, if the majority of people vote to give their money to the city, the real result will be the city’s bank account gets larger. Vote no on 2A so this money gets into the hands of people who need it now and they can spend it on their housing expenses.
If you don’t need this money, please donate it to charity. Voting no is a no-lose decision.
