Non bear-proof trash cans are inhumane

There are no neighborhoods, study areas, houses, businesses or other entities within the city limits that are free of bears and their incredible needs during this or any other time of year! Bears are entering their most critically important time of year. This annual time frame happens now and continues through late summer into the fall. This yearly phase is known as hyperphagia. It affects all black bears! During this time, a bear typically will consume 20,000 calories per day! They will eat, on average, 20 hours a day! They will eat anything and everything they get their paws on, including garbage until they hibernate in late October and November. I can’t believe there are trash cans in Durango that are not bear-proof; it is inhumane to treat our wildlife in this fashion and with such blatant disregard!
