North Main Event returns May 4

The North Main Event will be held on Saturday May 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is a celebration both of what the North Main District is today and what it is becoming.

The city of Durango created this event last year, and it was so successful The Durango Business Improvement District has made it part of the annual events that it produces.

The city’s vision for the North Main District includes walkable sections with residential and retail uses combined, bringing people and business together. The North Main Event allows attendees to experience this vision firsthand.

The North Main Event will offer up to 40 fun, interactive, family friendly activities at multiple businesses between 26th and 30th Streets. Entertainment will be provided in the Fiesta Mexicana parking area. The first 100 attendees will receive a free North Main District reusable shopping bag, filled with goodies from North Main District businesses.

A passport program will encourage attendees to visit as many of the activities as possible. Stamped passports will be eligible for a drawing for fabulous prizes. The winner must be present to win, and the drawing will be held between 2:30 and 3 p.m. at the entertainment stage at Fiesta Mexicana.

To make it easy to get around the four-block area, a temporary pedestrian crossing will be created at 30th and Main. There is an existing crossing at 27th and Main, at the Rec Center. Free parking is available at the Fairgrounds.

The activities are still coming together, but here are a few things that will be offered:

One of the newest businesses in the North Main District will hold its grand opening. Balloon darts will be provided by Durango Balloon Company.A listening lounge will be set up by the Animas City Night Bazaar.Durango Transit, Durango Police, Durango Fire and Protection, Durango Library and other City departments will all attend with fun offerings for kids and families.A coloring contest will be available from WeFill and Hans Hollenbeck (Hans is the guy at the Strater who does the old time wanted photos, as well as caricature drawings). There will also be games, coffee tastings, arts and crafts and maybe even a bouncy house! Not to mention a few bands and other entertainment. Visit TheMainEventDurango.com for more information and details.

When you arrive, find one of the passport stations to get your map and brochure, as well as your passport. If you are one of the first 100 to arrive, you will also receive a free reusable shopping bag.

The North Main District is a key area of growth for Durango. I hope you will join us as we celebrate many great North Main District businesses, and get a taste of how this part of town will function in the future.
