Durango to celebrate Oktoberfest

This weekend, American General Media will present Oktoberfest, a family-friendly festival showcasing local food, beer and live music.

All six Durango breweries will be represented, and in conjunction with Local First and the Durango Farmers Market, local chefs will be preparing and selling food made with locally sourced ingredients.

There will be games and a castle bouncy house for the kids. Tickets are $5 at the door; children younger than 12 and Durango Double participants enter free.

Proceeds from food sales benefit Local First, with additional proceeds going to Sexual Assault Services Organization.

Oktoberfest will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Buckley Park on Main Avenue between 12th and 13th streets.

Learn the uses and benefits of turmeric

Natural Grocers is sponsoring a free nutrition seminar, “Turmeric, the Spice of Life.” The class will be taught by Tiffany Godwin, a certified master nutrition therapist who serves as the nutritional health coach at Durango Natural Grocers.

Turmeric has many uses beyond curry, and in this workshop, attendees can learn how to combine the brightly colored spice with other spices and healthy fats to maximize the absorption and use of curcumin, the active and beneficial component in turmeric.

The class will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at Durango Natural Grocers, 1123 Camino del Rio, 247-4100.
