Get scones with a side of Sherlock Holmes
Baker Streak, a new artisan bakery service, is offering handcrafted baked goods made with organic, natural, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.
Owner Barbara Balaguer said the business is a merger of her lifelong passion for baking and all things Sherlock Holmes.
Opened under the provisions of the Colorado Cottage Foods Act, Baker Street’s homemade cookies, muffins, scones, breads, pies and cakes are made-to-order (many are available gluten-free) and can be delivered to your door with a $40 minimum order for in-town delivery and a $60 minimum for delivery within La Plata County.
Even if you’re not craving confections at the moment, fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle should check out Balaguer’s lively blog on the Baker Streak website at www.bakerstreak.com. To place an order, call 970-688-0679.
New local distillery plans tasting room opening
Amy and Michael McCardell, owners of Durango Craft Spirits, Durango’s new distillery, are finishing up their first three batches of vodka and preparing for the tentative Jan. 1 opening of their new tasting room at 1120 Main Ave.
While some distilleries purchase neutral grain spirits then reblend them, Durango Craft Spirits is a true “grain-to-glass” operation with regionally sourced ingredients, Amy McCardell said.
Wheat, barley and malt are brought in from Alamosa, and corn comes from the Durango Coop. Tastings will start with vodka, then gin will be added later this winter, McCardell said. Whiskey will be ready in about a year, and after about a two-year aging process, bourbon will follow.
