Cafe opens in Smiley Building

If you’re hungry or just want a snack while you’re strolling East Third Avenue or ducking into the always-busy Smiley Building, the brand new Smiley Café is just the ticket.

Manager Rocky Gingg proudly says he bakes and cooks everything on the short menu, from the banana bread and granola to the sandwiches and vinaigrettes for the kale or turkey salads. Open just a week, he hopes to add daily soups and a breakfast burrito.

And if all you want is coffee and a cookie, he has that too. The cafe is located upstairs on the 13th Street side and is open 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Olive oil shop changes hands

You might not have noticed the change, but Durango Olive Oil has new owners.

To celebrate, Cherie Morris and husband, Jack Llewellyn, (also the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce), are throwing a party from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the shop, 640 Main Ave.

The grand tasting will include samples of all the olive oils as well as the unique balsamic vinegars (you’ve got to try the smoked version, perfect for marinades). They’ll also feature desserts made from the products and offer free giveaways each hour and through the weekend. The store also stocks skin creams and lotions made from olive oil, good for our dry weather climate.

Popular eatery gets a makeover

An old favorite is getting a new face and a new menu this fall.

The farm-to-table restaurant Cyprus Cafe has finished painting the outside of its charming building on East Second Avenue and will take on refreshing the inside starting in November.

Owner Alison Dance plans to close for the month to redesign and redecorate the dining room – new dishes, new lights, new local artists – to put a new face on the restaurant she has owned and run for 18 years.

The menu will get a makeover, too, while maintaining Dance’s philosophy that food should be local, natural and sustainable. She plans to combine the lunch and dinner menu so more affordable options will be available to diners at night.

Eno Wine Bar and Coffee Cafe, her property just across the courtyard, will remain open and offer a hot lunch and dinner special while Cyprus is closed. The restaurant will reopen the first week of December.
