Garden share program for low-income families
Manna Soup Kitchen and the Garden Project of Southwest Colorado are partnering to offer a garden share program for low-income families. Garden Project Executive Director Sandhya Tillotson said they are hoping to expand the program, now in its second year, from eight to 15 families. Tillotson said that a donation of $500 provides a low-income family with children a weekly box of local produce, supplied by the Manna garden and donations from the Durango Farmers Market. The families also will receive weekly recipes and tips for making the best use of their produce.

Get local produce, eggs at Smiley Building
Judy and Heidi Rohwer of Rohwer’s Farm will bring their freshly picked greens, sweet beets, earthy carrots, spicy radishes and just-laid eggs to the Smiley Building, 1300 Third Ave., from noon to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, right inside the front door. They’ll also have spinach and kale in small amounts as well as a plentitude of potatoes and onions.
The mother and daughter team are amid ordering seeds for next season and invite customers to put in a request for their favorite Four Corners produce. They are miracle workers – locating the seed and growing one of the only non-Russet white potatoes in these parts, the Kennebec, to great success. You can email them at rohwersfarm@gmail.com.
Ska creates signature ale for Durango film fest
The 10th annual Durango Film Festival may not start for another six weeks, but why not party anyway?
Come celebrate the independent film festival gathering with the release of its own craft brew – “10” True Blonde Ale with Champagne yeast. Ska Brewing Co. has created the citrus-inflected beer with orange peel and mandarina Bavaria hops just for the occasion.
The release party will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Ska, 225 Girard St. in Bodo Park. There will be movie trivia quizzes, prizes and more.
For those who love movies as well as beer, organizers will reveal the lineup for this year’s festival, which will include shorts, animation, documentaries, comedies and feature films, among others. The festival itself will be held March 4-8, but “10” can be found at most local liquor stores starting Thursday. It will also be available on draft at certain bars and restaurants throughout Durango from now until the end of the festival.
