Just when it seemed the Ignacio Lady Bobcats may have caught Pagosa Springs’ Lady Pirates in something of a vulnerable state Saturday afternoon, Pagosa Springs junior Kylie Ketchum, well … caught them.

The Pirates started pulling ahead late in the third quarter en route to a 41-29 victory.

Pagosa Springs improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in 3A/4A Intermountain league play. Ignacio fell to 4-6 and 0-2 in league play.

After senior teammate Annie O’Donnell knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing, earning the visitors a 14-13 lead early in the third quarter of a game deadlocked at 11-11 through one half, Ignacio soon managed to retie at 14-14, and then again at 16-all before Ketchum banked in a trey from nearly straight away with 4:25 left.

One minute, 15 seconds later, with Pagosa Springs still leading 19-16, Ketchum collected an offensive rebound, converted it into two more points, and was fouled by Ignacio’s Darlyn Mendoza-Lechuga. Ketchum nailed the resulting free throw.

Although Ignacio managed to respond make it a 24-21 game with 1:49 left in the third, momentum belonged to the Lady Pirates – who, via senior Daveyann Snarr’s own bank-shot triple with three seconds remaining, took a 31-23 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Pagosa Springs, Class 4A’s sixth-ranked team going in, went 3 of 4 from the free-throw line down the home stretch, while Ignacio went 0 of 4.

Ignacio’s Cosio totaled a game-high 14 points, while Pagosa Springs’ Ketchum scored 12 points. Lady Pirate junior Elizabeth Currier scored 11 points.

Ignacio will host Bayfield Thursday night.
