Practice makes blowout

Durango girls finally open season – in style

Two weeks worth of goals poured out of the Durango High School girls lacrosse team in its season opener Saturday.

The Demons originally were scheduled to open the season March 6 against Steamboat Springs, but poor field conditions pushed the meeting back.

DHS made up for lost time with a 16-3 win over the Sailors in new head coach Katie deButts’ first game in Durango.

“We’ve been lucky in that we’ve had three weeks of practice. I think that showed (Saturday),” deButts said. “I think, ultimately, even though (the rescheduling) was a bummer, it did help us.”

The Demons scored two goals in the game’s first 90 seconds to set the tone.

“That was very comforting,” deButts said.

Payton Randle led Durango’s attack with six goals and five ground balls, which are analogous to rebounds. She also picked up two assists.

“We kept moving the ball, which opened up more space,” said Randle, daughter of Erin and John Randle. “It was easy to cut and get open. They did a good job of finding me.”

Shalee Hawkins played the maestro role with a team-high five assists. She also scored four goals in her first game at attack after playing defense most of last season.

“I had to find myself a new area,” said Hawkins, daughter of Denise and Ty Hawkins. “We were all spreading out.”

And spreading it around.

Five Demons scored, and five also picked up assists.

“The more people you have who are making shots and taking shots, the more chances you have,” deButts said.

The Sailors found few chances.

Steamboat Springs (0-4, 0-2 Mountain League) scored three goals, but DHS goalie Dyno Shilakis rarely was pressured outside of those shots.

With Durango’s first game finally in the bag, the Demons are off on spring break. Their next game will be April 3 at Telluride.

“It gives everyone a really positive feeling (moving forward),” deButts said.
