Prep Roundup: Bayfield volleyball goes 2-0 at IML triangular

Durango softball swept by Montrose

Despite a spirited post-game senior day atmosphere for the Durango High School softball team, the Demons were unable to produce on the diamond, as Montrose topped the Demons 16-1 in four innings, and 26-6 in five innings in Saturday’s doubleheader at DHS.

Durango (8-7, 2-4 5A/4A Southwestern League) recorded three hits in the first game after a stellar performance on the mound from Montrose’s Kennadie Minerich, who struck out three. Lily Longan, Emma Candelaria and Alaysia Kremer all went 1-for-2 in the first game.

In Game 2, the Demons recorded six runs in the second inning, but that was it, as the Demons were unable to keep pace with a red-hot Montrose offense.

“Well, we’re mired in a massive slump,” said DHS head coach John Bernazzani. “All systems that have been go are currently down. It’s tough, it’s the nature of the game. It’s tough if you stay mired in a slump for too long and it can really hurt you. On top of that, we’ve been really unlucky. With the exception of one inning, we hit leather. We hit the ball well and they hit dirt and grass. ... We didn’t have the luck of the Irish, or the luck of anybody for that matter.”

In Game 2, Candelaria went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Bela Torres recorded a two-run RBI triple on her senior day, while Kremer went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double.

“They have to believe in the kind of team they know they can be, and were for the first half of the season,” Bernazzani said.

DHS will travel to Greeley for the Northridge High School tournament on Friday.
