Prep Roundup: Durango High School soccer thumps Farmington in opener

BHS, DHS volleyball win on road

The opening match for the Durango High School boys soccer team was hardly in doubt, as the Demons thumped Farmington High School 6-0 in Tuesday’s season opener at FHS.

Junior transfer Sayer Frontella got his DHS career off to a flying start, as he scored three goals. Senior midfielder Brayden Lyons scored twice, while junior Moritz Rosik also scored his first goal in the win. Goalkeepers Levi Larson, a sophomore, and senior Caleb McGrath split time in net to record the shutout.

“I thought, for the first game of the season, we showed a lot of attacking talent, which is nice because we weren’t really sure where we were at with it being the preseason,” said DHS head coach Aaron Champenoy, who entered his second season in charge. “It was sort of an experimental night for us to test different guys in different spots, and while we have some things to work on, it was a good start.”

Durango (1-0), ranked No. 8 in the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Class 4A preseason coaches poll, will play two top-10 Class 4A teams this weekend. The Demons will travel to No. 6 Glenwood Springs at 4 p.m. Friday and will stay on the road to take on No. 7 Battle Mountain at 1 p.m. Saturday in Edwards.

“This weekend is going to be tough, but it will be a good test for us to see where we are at,” Champenoy said.

Volleyball

Durango 3, Farmington 2

VolleyballThe Durango High School volleyball team opened up its 2019 campaign with a five-set thriller at Farmington High School on Tuesday night, but it came at a cost, as the Demons lost star hitter Millie O’Ketter to a sprained ankle.

The Demons (1-0) won the match 27-25, 20-25, 25-12, 21-25 and 15-10.

Durango High School’s Millie O’Ketter dives after a ball during the first set of Tuesday’s match against Farmington High School in Farmington. O’Ketter sprained her ankle in the match, but the Demons won in five sets.

“It was a bittersweet night for us,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said. “Millie O’Ketter went down with a sprained ankle halfway through Game 2, but the silver lining to all of this is that our bench stepped up in a big way. It was impressive how they came together to pull out the win, especially in the first game of the season.

“Kyle Rowland played great all the way around, Lainey Voss stepped up after Millie got hurt, and Grace Caldwell, Paige Ammerman and Sydney Summers all had a big night for us.”

Statistics were not made available.

The Demons will host the Farmington Scorpions (0-1) at 6 p.m. Sept. 5.

Bayfield 3, Piedra Vista 0

The Bayfield High School volleyball team got its season off to a fast start after it dominated Piedra Vista High School in straight sets, 25-14, 25-9 and 25-19 Tuesday night in Farmington.

Mavis Edwards led the Wolverines with 10 kills, while Annie Fusco had six. Lana McKee and Karyssa Gosney recorded 12 digs apiece.

Piedra Vista took a set lead only four times in the match. BHS led by 11 points two separate times in the first game and led by as much as 17 points during Game 2. In Game 3, the teams were tied eight times, but the Wolverines went on a 5-0 burst at 16-all and were able to coast home from there.

“It was a big win for us,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “It’s rare to have a good performance against a great Piedra Vista team like this. We’re seeing some benefits already of building off of experience this offseason, and we are grateful that they all bought into BHS volleyball. Tonight was a testament to all the hard work we put in during the offseason. We worked through those tough moments tonight and are excited about the season moving forward.”

The Wolverines will host Monte Vista at 2 p.m. Sept. 7.
