Prep Roundup: Durango High School volleyball defeats Grand Junction Central in four sets

Demons, down 15-4 in third set, fight back to beat GJ Central

The Durango High School volleyball team defeated Grand Junction Central in four sets 3-1 Friday afternoon at DHS for its homecoming match, with scores of 25-13, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-17. After being tied at one set apiece, the Demons (6-8, 3-3 5A/4A Southwestern League) were down 15-4 before storming all the way back to take the set, 25-23. The Demons eventually went on to win the fourth set and the match 25-17

Head coach Colleen Vogt was impressed with her team’s performance and thought they were resilient in the win.

“It was awesome to come back down in the third set, being down 15-4,” Vogt said. “We didn’t stop fighting and that third set was so much fun to be a part of. The girls played really hard and I was impressed with our serving and passing.”

Statistics were not made available.

Durango will play Fruita Monument at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Durango High School.

Cross-country

The Pagosa Springs girls cross-country team won the Chicken Creek Cross-Country Invitational, hosted by Mancos High School, Friday afternoon in Mancos. The Pirates finished with 19 points, while Montezuma-Cortez finished in fourth out of the five-team event, with 95 points.

Freshman Sierra Liverett of Pagosa Springs won the race with a time of 22 minutes, 25.00 seconds. Sophomore Ridley Dennison led Montezuma-Cortez, finishing in 13th overall with a time of 25:04.00. Rounding out the top three finishers for the Panthers were freshman Siren Utrecht, who finished in 25th with a time of 27:20.00, and Emalie Myers, who took 27th with a time of 27:27.00.

On the boys side, Monticello High School of Utah took the team title, finishing with 16 points, as they had the top four finishers.

Adam Bunker led the way for the Buckaroos and won the race with a time of 17:53.00.

Rounding out the team scores for the boys race were Pagosa Springs with 56 points, Mancos with 79 and San Juan Utah with 95 points.
