Prep Roundup: Durango High School volleyball gets revenge on Piedra Vista

Bayfield boys soccer drops league opener

The Durango High School volleyball team won its second consecutive match in straight sets, as the Demons topped Piedra Vista Tuesday night at Durango High School.

Durango won 3-0, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18, and despite the clean sweep, head coach Colleen Vogt said it was another tough match.

“It was back and forth all three sets, and after the game, it looked like we went all five,” Vogt said. “We won some clutch points at the end of games, but (Piedra Vista) did not go away. Our defense and hitting were good again, and we really cut down on our errors.”

The teams met last week in Farmington, and the Panthers (3-6) beat Durango in five sets. However, Tuesday night was a different outcome, as the Demons were able to control their hitting.

Grace Caldwell led Durango with six kills, while Millie O’Ketter and Kyle Rowland had five each. The Demons (4-1) also got contributions in assists, as Emmy Romero had a team-high 12, while Paige Ammerman had 10. O’Ketter led the team with nine digs, while Leah Wesley and Ammerman had three service aces on the night.

“We tracked our hitting errors tonight and we never had more than seven in a game, which was huge for us,” Vogt said.

DHS will face Montrose (7-2, 1-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) in its conference opener at 1 p.m. Saturday at Durango High School.
