Prep Roundup: Durango tennis falls to Fruita

Stritikus twins get win

Durango High School’s boys tennis team came up short against Fruita Monument in one of its two home matches of the season, as it lost to the Wildcats 6-1 despite pushing three matches to a third set.

The lone win on the day came from the No. 4 doubles pair of Hays and Leo Stritikus, who won 6-2, 1-6 and 12-10 in the tiebreaker.

At No. 1 singles, Elias Fiddler lost to Brendan Miller, 6-1, 7-5, while at No. 2 singles, Calan Barnhardt went to three sets, but lost 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. At No. 1 doubles, Kai Skowlund and Aedan Hall fell to Jake Heer and August Burneke, 6-1, 6-2.

“The boys fought hard today and we went to three tiebreaker rounds and two extended sets,” said DHS coach Todd Jolley. “Our playing today was night and day from when we faced Fruita last weekend. Our doubles four brought their twin magic to the court for our only win, but the scores certainly don’t show how close it really was. I’m proud of the growth they’ve shown, and I’m confident they’ll do even better (Saturday) morning.”

The Demons will host the Wildcats for their final home match of the season at 9 a.m. Saturday at the DHS tennis courts.
