Quarter-acre fire burning on Missionary Ridge

Firefighters were monitoring a quarter-acre fire Thursday about three miles southwest of Henderson Lake in the Bear Creek drainage on Missionary Ridge.

Smoke from the small, lightning-caused wildland fire could be seen from Rockwood and the Glacier Club, said Ann Bond, public affairs specialist with the San Juan National Forest, in a news release issued Thursday afternoon.

Chris Tipton, fire management officer for the Columbine Ranger District, said three firefighters were monitoring the small fire, which is burning in an area that has received rain in the past 24 hours.

Tipton said the fire is burning at a “very low, low, low level of intensity.”

The three firefighters were determining the best strategy to contain the small fire, Tipton said. He added that smoke also could be seen from the U.S. Highway 550 corridor.

Firefighters have not called for any backup resources, Bond said in the news release.
