Raising awareness of childhood cancer

“Our whole purpose ... is to build awareness that this is the leading cause of death by disease in children,” said Mary Nickels, whose daughter, Mattie Aiello, died of leukemia in 2011. Nickels spoke Thursday afternoon before a Durango High School baseball game at DHS. Durango players wore gold jerseys. “Gold is the color of childhood cancer,” Nickels said.
