This week, I had multiple messages from clients and colleagues asking, “What’s next?” With the recent changes in our political landscape, we face a moment that threatens to deepen the existing divide and jeopardize the safety and opportunities of our most vulnerable residents.
Local nonprofits have already poured their hearts into supporting Durango, and their instinct now is to dig even deeper. However, many are left wondering how much more they can bear. The reality is the demand for services continues to rise, funding is shrinking, making it increasingly difficult to meet the needs of our community. As the costs of essentials like affordable and healthy food, housing and transportation continue to climb, the support from regional donors and funders has never been more critical. If there is a rallying cry to guide us through the next four years, it is this, “Ignore the media cycle. Serve the community.”
This Colorado Gives season presents crucial opportunities to quickly support local nonprofits. The stakes are higher than ever, and we must act boldly and decisively. Funders, it’s time to move beyond traditional funding models and invest directly in the communities we serve. We need unrestricted, trust-based funding that will empower local nonprofits to respond creatively and effectively to the mounting pressures of social inequities and rising costs.
Support after-school nonprofits. Invest in local food-based systems. Champion community engagement initiatives that provide vital resources for residents. Advocate for the city’s efforts to make housing and transportation more affordable.
