Records broken as Fort Lewis softball beats Colorado Mines 7-4, loses 6-0 to New Mexico Highlands

Skyhawks have new career wins and hits leaders

The Fort Lewis College softball team had mixed results in two games on Sunday, but two FLC seniors will remember the day forever.

In the Skyhawks’ first game of the day against Colorado Mines, two Fort Lewis school records were broken. Senior Missy Fundora’s second-inning double set a new FLC record with 205 career hits.

FLC’s 7-4 win was also a record-breaker for senior pitcher Victoria Johnson, who is now the Skyhawks’ all-time wins leader with 37.

FLC, however, dropped the second game of the day against New Mexico Highlands, 6-0.

Fundora’s historic hit was a double that came in her second at-bat of the day with the Skyhawks already up 2-0. The hit broke the record of current Durango High School softball coach and FLC great Chelsea Rodriguez.

Johnson tossed 5 1/3 innings in the circle and allowed four runs on seven hits in earning the win. She passed Kassie Haubert’s record previously held at 36.

The Skyhawks (10-23, 7-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) were led by another impressive performance by Angelique Elemen.

The freshman catcher got things started early for the FLC offense with a two-run double in the first inning. Two innings later, she blasted her team-leading ninth home run.

Fundora’s fifth-inning double put the Skyhawks up 6-1 and Adriana Rosthenhausler follow with a single that plated Gianna Melaragno and extended the lead.

The Orediggers (12-15, 10-10 RMAC) scored three runs in the sixth inning, but Rachel Foos came in and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to secure the victory.

In the second game of the day, New Mexico Highlands (8-21, 5-15 RMAC) shutout the Skyhawks 6-0.

Olivia Goldberg took the loss in the circle, but had little help behind her as the defense committed three errors. She gave up three runs, none of which were earned, and the offense went cold.

Fort Lewis will travel to Denver for back-to-back doubleheaders beginning at noon Friday and Saturday.
