San Juan Basin Health will not receive yellow fever vaccine until mid-2018

Production of yellow fever vaccine in the U.S. has been discontinued while the manufacturer transitions production to a new facility. As a result, San Juan Basin Public Health will not receive an additional supply of the vaccine until mid-2018.

Yellow fever is a serious disease caused by a virus found in parts of Africa and South America. The disease spreads through the bite of infected mosquitoes and cannot be transfered person to person. The majority of people with yellow fever are hospitalized.

Anyone unable to receive the vaccine should consider postponing trips to countries with yellow fever vaccine requirements.

For anyone who plans to travel to Africa or South America, call SJBPH at 247-5702 to schedule a consultation with an immunization nurse or visit http://bit.ly/2AJFquL for more information about the vaccine shortage.
