I’m a part-time La Plata County resident but a full-time taxpayer, so I have an opinion to express. My wife and I have summered in the Durango area for the past 14 years. Durango is a great, great town. Wonderful buildings, great shops and restaurants – all part of what makes it a terrific place. But what really makes Durango great are the people who live and work here – from the shop owners, restaurant owners, workers in the retail establishments, auto repair shops, etc.
So it comes as quite a surprise that my enthusiasm for Durango and its people evidently is not shared by the sheriff of La Plata County. Duke Schirard has a right to express his opinions (This is America), but his opinions lose their confidentiality when expressed on a computer owned by the county. It seems to be a bit of a habit! I find it hard to believe that he disdains Durangoans so much that it’s distasteful for him to be in town. Apparently, if you don’t subscribe to his politics, there’s no room for you in this town. To the good people of Durango, remember this blatant intolerance directed toward the citizenry on Election Day.
