How popular will these green safety zones be on a dark evening when a cyclist is waiting for the light to change in one of the green-painted main traffic lanes, and a motorist is approaching at the speed limit? The cyclist will be killed instantly, and the tourist will probably tell the officer he just assumed the green paint was left over from the St. Patrick’s Day parade, and he never saw the bicycle.
The city is really asking for a big lawsuit by putting cyclists out there in this suicide zone and is not helping cyclists or motorists with this recent addition to the amusement park atmosphere on the highway.
Durango has already given motorists enough distractions with the flashing-light crosswalks and doesn’t need to confuse tourists more with the green paint. Remove the paint before the first fatality reaches front page news.
