The cardiology program at San Juan Regional Medical Center recently announced it was the first hospital in New Mexico to receive and use the right-ventricular Impella heart pump, known as the Impella RP, to care for patients who have suffered from shock or a heart attack.
The pump is FDA-approved for patients with right heart failure and allows the patient’s heart to rest and recover its ability to pump blood. It can be effective for patients who experience cardiogenic shock during acute myocardial infarction because 30 percent of shock patients experience bi-ventricular failure.
