A “shelter in place” order was issued Thursday afternoon at Escalante Middle School for a gas line that broke on Baker Lane, delaying seven bus routes for Durango School District 9-R, school officials said.
The school shut its doors just before students were released at 3:30 p.m., said Julie Popp, spokeswoman for the school district. The “shelter in place” order is different from a lockdown in that students are kept at the school under adult supervision, but not locked inside rooms.
Seven buses on the school’s property were unable to leave because of the gas leak. They included these bus routes: DP1, SS3, FM1, FM3, FM4, DW1 and RJ1. The school was taken out of its “shelter in place” order around 4:45 p.m., which resulted in “a pretty significant delay” for those routes, Popp said.
For updates about the status of the “shelter in place” order, call the school district at 375-3811.
