Skyhawks’ 2-0 advantage swings the Mustangs’ favor

A 2-0 lead did not hold up on the road for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team.

FLC (6-17, 3-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost its seventh match in its last eight 3-2 (23-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-20, 15-10) to Western New Mexico University on Friday in Silver City, New Mexico.

The Skyhawks appeared poised to win just their second conference road match after the first two sets but could not keep up with the Mustangs in the final three.

Western N.M. upped its offensive game after the break. The Mustangs hit .256, .314 and .360 in the final three sets, while the Skyhawks never hit above .207.

FLC made five hitting errors in the decisive fifth set, compared to zero for Western N.M.

Senior Ashley Wells carried the FLC offense with 22 kills and a .362 hitting percentage. She also added 22 digs.

Libero Ally Dell’Amico led the Skyhawks with 28 digs, and Heather Danny picked up 31 assists.

The Mustangs had four players with double-digit kills, led by Sheila Menezes’ 16.

Both teams had seven aces during the match, and FLC made six errors from the service line, compared to seven by the Mustangs.

FLC will continue its New Mexico road trip with a game against the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls at 7 p.m. Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M.
