The Fort Lewis women’s soccer team hosted West Texas A&M to start its season on Friday.
The Lady Buffs, however, scored the win, 4-1.
“We started with a team that’s usually in the top three in the Lonestar (conference) and sometimes wins it,” said FLC head coach Damian Clarke. “We’re not hiding. We’ll just keep getting better.”
West Texas scored in the 22nd minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
At the start of the second half, Fort Lewis had some good ball movement, passing the ball around and up the field. West Texas, however, stole the ball and knocked over a Skyhawk and took advantage of the opening to score and go ahead 2-0.
Fort Lewis, however, answered a minute later. After West Texas’ Alexsis Villareal got a yellow card, Maddie Allen kicked the ball from just beyond midfield into West Texas A&M’s goal box. Katie Smith got on the other end of the ball and kicked it in the net to cut the lead in half, 2-1.
West Texas, however, would add two more goals to pull away.
Fort Lewis is still trying to find the best spot for several of its players. Other players, including Elizabeth David, are out, and Danielle Gonzales was playing centerback instead of forward for the contest.
“I saw a lot of players’ technical skills at a different level than they were last year,” Clarke said. “But we overplayed some situations and need to make better decisions.”
The Skyhawks will host Texas Permian Basin at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Fort Lewis’ men’s soccer team will also host Texas Permian Basin at 4 p.m. Saturday.
